Important Areas for Seabirds in the Sea
The main objective of this project was to identify the most important areas at sea for seabirds occurring within the Portuguese EEZ, which will later be classified as Marine IBAs according to BirdLife International IBA criteria.

Tasks
- A.1: Cartographic analysis of the most appropriate areas for seabird occurrence.
- A.2: WS with the objective of defining a methodology for the delimitation of appropriate areas at sea for seabirds protected by the Birds Directive.
- C.1 : Radio-tracking of several seabird species (Bulweria bulwerii, Oceanodroma castro and Sterna dougallii) in Azores, Madeira and Berlenga archipelagos.
- C.2: Track of Calonectris diomedea boreal with data-loggers in Azores, Madeira and Berlenga archipelagos.
- C.3 : Census of seabirds at sea, from boat and airplane, to determine densities, in the mainland and Madeira Archipelago.
- C.4 and C5 : Census of seabirds from tuna fishing boats in the Azores Archipelago.
- C.6 : Identification of marine IBAs in the mainland and Madeira and Azores archipelagos.
- C.7 : Characterization of the marine IBAs identified and proposals for conservation of the seabirds protected by the Birds Directive.
- E.1 : Layman report
- E.2 : Participation in three international meetings involving matters related with Natura 2000 and MPA protection.
- E.3: Publication of the book "Important Areas for Seabirds in Portugal"
- E.4: Leaflet about Marine IBasin collaboration with SEO-BirdLife project "Important Areas for seabirds in Spain".
- E.5: CDrom for public awareness about seabird conservation.
Useful outputs for MAIA
- Better knowledge on the distribution and abundance of seabirds included on the Annex I of Birds Directive and on the main variables influencing their distribution at sea, in the Portuguese mainland and Azores and Madeira archipelagos.
- Marine IBAs in Portugal identified.
- General methodology to identify IBAs at sea defined.
- Database of seabird distribution available.
- Leaflets and CD rom about seabird conservation and marine IBAs available.
